The ghosts of crackling flames and urgent sirens still whisper through these walls. This is the Bürgerzentrum Alte Feuerwache in Cologne. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to resilience community and the power of preservation.
Imagine 1890. A grand fire station rises in Cologne’s Agnesviertel. It’s one of the first structures in this burgeoning neighborhood. A massive complex housing the city’s firefighters and their equipment. It occupied a space that would normally contain a whole block of houses. This is because the fire brigade’s heavy machinery required large spaces for storage maneuvers and drills.
By 1974 the fire station was outdated. The city planned demolition. A competition swimming pool was slated to replace this historical building. But the citizens of the Agnesviertel had other ideas. A local group Bürgerinitiative Nördliche Altstadt BINA formed the Bürgerzentrum Alte Feuerwache e V. They fought to save the fire station. Their vision was to transform it into a community center.
Their campaign was successful. In 1986 the Bürgerzentrum Alte Feuerwache officially opened. A large mural depicting a poem by Nazim Hikmet graced the south wall. It became a landmark for the neighborhood. The center has since become a vibrant hub. It hosts a diverse range of social ecological and democratic initiatives. Artists craftspeople educators and political groups find space here. They use this building as a meeting space to exchange ideas.
The inner courtyard is a lovely place to meet. It’s a testament to this place’s charming unpretentiousness. A café and regular flea markets further add to its lively atmosphere. The four-story riser tower remains a striking feature of the building. Round windows in the stable gates are other unique architectural details. The red and yellow brick and decorative iron anchors are hallmarks of the building’s Wilhelminian style. This style makes the building worthy of its designation as a listed building.
Despite financial challenges throughout the years. The Bürgerzentrum Alte Feuerwache continues to thrive. It demonstrates the enduring spirit of Cologne’s community. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine creating a vibrant and inclusive space for all. Today the sounds of laughter and discussion replace the sounds of sirens. Yet the spirit of community remains strong. This building still protects the residents of Cologne but now in a new and different way.
