It’s a vibrant hub a place where the city’s administration meets its people. Located in the Luminaden shopping center it’s a far cry from its cramped previous location on the fourth floor of the Rathaus.
Before 2021 the Bürgerbüro was a scene of constant struggle. Overcrowding was a major issue. The elevators were often jammed with people waiting for their turn. Hygiene regulations during the pandemic only worsened the situation. Only two people could use the elevators at any given time. This caused long waits and frustrated citizens and employees alike. The Bezirksregierung Köln even stepped in urging the city to find a solution.
The former Sparkasse branch offered a near-perfect solution. The space is sizable and efficiently laid out. There are separate areas for counter service and waiting. The redesign was extensive. An architect and an acoustician worked to improve the space. Gone are the dark red stone floors and cherry wood. Instead you’ll find calming gray-green seating and lots of plants. Even the sound is more pleasant thanks to the new carpeting and felt wall coverings.
The move wasn’t without its hiccups. Delays in fire safety upgrades and IT cabling pushed back the opening. Initially planned for early 2021 the Bürgerbüro finally opened its doors later that year.
But the wait was worth it. The Bürgerbüro in den Luminaden is a modern and accessible space. It is easily reached by public transport and has easy car access. All areas are wheelchair accessible. The new location is expected to boost foot traffic in the Luminaden. City officials hope it will revitalize the area. Employees now enjoy two kitchens and a lounge. Some desks are even height adjustable.
The Bürgerbüro offers a wide range of services. You can apply for or pick up passports ID cards and more. Appointments are necessary but same-day appointments for urgent cases are now available.
More Bürgerbüro branches are planned for Opladen and Schlebusch. This move has solved a critical problem. It has significantly improved service for both citizens and employees.
