Timeworn stones whisper tales. Before you stands Burg Hofen a proud ruin overlooking the Neckar River. This isn’t just any castle. It’s Stuttgart’s only ruin with towering wall remnants.

Built around 1250 Burg Hofen served a vital purpose. It secured a Neckar River crossing a crucial point for trade. Think of the bustling activity the river traffic. The castle protected this important route. Imagine merchants and travelers. They passed beneath its watchful gaze.

The Grafen von Württemberg were the original builders. They used their power to control this strategic location. Cuno von Mühlhausen is mentioned as the lord. This castle’s power influenced the region.

Later the von Hofen family inherited the castle. Their reign ended with Luithart IV’s death in 1369. The castle then passed to Graf Eberhard II von Württemberg. He gave it as a fief to the von Neuhausen family. They controlled Burg Hofen for centuries. A fascinating bit of history. They were not the original builders.

The Thirty Years’ War brought devastation. The castle burned. The structure suffered extensive damage. It fell into gradual decline. It did not completely collapse though.

In the 19th century more destruction occurred. Parts were demolished. The stones were used for other purposes including the construction of St Barbara’s Church. It’s a sad but common story. Many old buildings have had a similar fate.

The city of Stuttgart purchased Burg Hofen in 1999. They began careful restoration work. This preserved the historic structure. Today you can freely explore the castle ruins.
