Picture this: Burg Bachem. A majestic water castle its foundations resting on sturdy wooden piles like a Venetian palace. This isn’t just any castle. It’s a piece of living history in the Frechen-Bachem district of Cologne. Burg Bachem boasts a rich past. Its origins are shrouded in some mystery. However evidence suggests construction started around 1200 or even earlier. A residential tower dating back to 1250 stands as a testament. Remarkably this tower was built using an ancient Roman water pipe as part of its foundation.

Burg Bachem’s story is one of resilience. In 1583 it suffered a devastating destruction. Yet it rose again. After the Thirty Years’ War the tower and south wing were rebuilt. A three-arched bridge was constructed. By 1705 the north wing was restored. Over the centuries Burg Bachem changed hands. Baron Antonius von Geldern owned it in the 18th century. Later in 1836 Franz Egon von Fürstenberg-Stammheim acquired it. He undertook extensive renovations.

The castle is divided into a main castle and an outer ward. A moat surrounds the complex some parts reflooded today. The surviving buildings blend architectural styles. The romantic brick castle house is complemented by structures from the 17th and 18th centuries. Between 1973 and 1978 the main castle was extensively restored. It remains in private ownership belonging to the Barons of Fürstenberg who reside there. Until 2018 seven apartments were created. Six are rented one is occupied by the owner.

Standing here today you can almost feel the echoes of centuries past. Imagine the knights and ladies who once walked these halls. Envision the battles fought the sieges endured. Burg Bachem has weathered storms. It continues to stand proudly. Today it represents a fascinating blend of the ancient and the modern. A testament to history’s endurance. This water castle offers a unique glimpse into Cologne’s fascinating past. A reminder of times gone by. But also an example of preservation and adaptation for the future.
