Across the Venetian Lagoon, a kaleidoscope of colors beckons. Burano, a small island north of Venice, is famous for its vibrantly painted houses. But its story goes far beyond the rainbow hues. Burano was settled by Romans and later by people from Altino, fleeing Attila’s advance. They named it after a gate of their former city. In the 16th century, Burano became renowned for its exquisite needle lace. Legend says Leonardo da Vinci himself, during his 1481 visit, was so impressed by similar lace from Pano Lefkara in Cyprus, that he bought some for Milan’s Duomo. This intricate craft flourished on Burano, its delicate threads exported across Europe. The industry declined in the 18th century but was revived in 1872 with the opening of a lacemaking school. Today, while authentic Burano lace is a rare and costly treasure due to the time-consuming process, the tradition continues. Beyond lace, Burano boasts a unique system for its colorful houses. Residents must request permission from the government to paint their homes, and only specific colors are allowed for each lot. This tradition ensures Burano’s vibrant charm remains consistent. The heart of Burano is Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, home to the Lace Museum, Town Hall, a well made of Istrian stone, and a statue of the composer Baldassare Galuppi. The church of San Martino houses a leaning campanile and a Tiepolo painting. Burano, a jewel in the Venetian Lagoon, offers a charming escape. Its vibrant colors and rich history of lacemaking create a unique experience, a world away from the bustling streets of Venice.
