In 1924, a seed of empowerment was planted in the heart of Tokyo. This seed, sown by Ishiko Shimada, blossomed into Bunkyo Gakuin University. Shimada’s vision was to equip women with the skills for independence. Bunkyo Gakuin University stands as a testament to that vision. The university initially focused on sewing, reflecting the practical skills valued at the time. It was first known as the Shimada Sewing Training Institute. A year later, it became the Hongo Girls’ Academy. Bunkyo Gakuin University has always adapted to the changing needs of society. In 1964, it established a junior college. In 1991, it broke new ground by creating the first Faculty of Business Administration at a women’s university in Japan. This bold move signaled its commitment to preparing women for leadership roles.
