Originally part of the Constantia Estate, Buitenverwachting awaits us. Meaning “beyond expectation,” it sits beautifully on Constantiaberg’s slopes. The breezes from the nearby oceans cool Buitenverwachting’s vines. These vines produce internationally acclaimed wines. They boast great complexity and distinctive fragrant profiles.
In 1773, Cornelis Brink acquired a 200 morgen sub-division. In 1825, 90000 vines were planted. This helped Buitenverwachting flourish as a wine farm.
Let’s step inside the historic wine cellar for our tasting experience. Notice the traditional thatched roof. Admire the white-washed walls and rare yellow-wood ceilings. Inside Buitenverwachting, the atmosphere is casual. Leather couches and small lounges invite relaxation. A tasting bar stands ready.
Step onto the stone-tiled terrace. It overlooks the lawns and a magnificent 250-year-old Norfolk Pine. Imagine lingering here for hours. Many visitors purchase a bottle. They relax on the lawns with friends and family. All wines are offered for tasting for a small fee. What a bargain.
Consider a charcuterie platter with fresh baguettes. Artisan ale can cleanse your pallet. Buitenverwachting offers a delightful experience.
Buitenverwachting’s wine estate offers more than just wine. The Beyond restaurant features dishes with local products. Rare meats and artisan cheeses are on offer. The restaurant provides a unique view of the Constantia Mountains. Coffee BloC offers excellent coffee specialities. Cakes and pastries provide another experience for the palate.
Buitenverwachting’s history is rich. Simon van der Stel founded the Constantia Estate in the 17th century. The Hamburg couple Richard and Christine Müller purchased the historic estate in 1980. They restored it with love. After 30 years, they revived wine cultivation. Only the best vines were planted. Today, Lars Maack manages Buitenverwachting.
Buitenverwachting consistently delivers good wines. Granite soils and sea breezes help. The Buitenverwachting Christine is a popular choice. It is a red blend named after the owner’s wife. The Hussey’s Vlei Sauvignon Blanc is also impressive.
