In the early days, gas appliances were basic. It was difficult to convince Australians that they were safe and beneficial. Positive promotion and technical backing were needed. This would assure the community that gas appliances were safe to use. As a result, the National Gas Association (NGA) and the Australian Gas Institute (AGI) formed. They were established in 1925 and 1932 respectively.
NGA focused on promotional activities for the gas industry. AGI was a scientific body providing technical expertise. The discovery of oil and natural gas in Bass Strait gave Victoria an opportunity for energy self-sufficiency. But the economic benefits would only be realized if consumers were satisfied. Natural Gas had to be seen as a safe, reliable, efficient, and economical fuel. To achieve this, NGA and AGI merged. This formed The Australian Gas Association (AGA).
AGA was set up as a national, not-for-profit, membership association. Its members included gas producers and suppliers. It also included manufacturers and importers of gas products. Other affiliate companies were members too.
In the early 1960s, AGA created Australian Gas Committees. These committees developed safety Standards/Codes for gas appliances. They also covered gas-carrying components and controls. Under AGA’s guidance, the industry produced world-class safety standards. This gave manufacturers the direction to produce safe gas products.
In 2004, AGA transferred the administration of gas product Standards to Standards Australia. This allowed AGA to focus on other industry developments. They continued to contribute to the Standards writing process.
AGA launched the AGA gas product approval scheme in the 1960s. Suppliers and manufacturers approved their gas products before selling them. This ensured that only compliant gas appliances were available. The compliance and safety of gas products were critical. It provided assurance and confidence in gas use.
Today, it is called “The AGA Product Certification Scheme for Type-Tested Gas Products”. It covers thousands of certified brands and models.
