Buchheim is home to about 12,840 people. It is part of the greater Cologne area. Cologne sits in the region of North Rhine-Westphalia. Our location is about 34.6 km from Dusseldorf. Dusseldorf is the regional capital. Berlin is about 473.3 km away from Buchheim.

Now, let’s talk about art. While we’re here in Buchheim, it is worth mentioning a significant figure in the art world. His name is Lothar-Günther Buchheim. He was born in 1918 and died in 2007. Buchheim was a man of many talents. He was a painter and a photographer. He also wrote books and made films. Furthermore, he was a collector and a museum founder.

Buchheim founded the Buchheim Museum of Imagination. It is located in Bernried. Bernried is near Lake Starnberg. His museum showcases German Expressionist art. You will find works by Max Beckmann and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner there. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel are also featured. Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, and Otto Dix are some other artists there.

Buchheim’s life was quite eventful. In 1938, he paddled down the Danube River. He went all the way to the Black Sea in a kayak. During World War II, he served in the German Navy. He documented his experiences in drawings, watercolors, and photos.

His most famous work is the novel “Das Boot”. It tells the story of a German U-boat crew during the war. The book became a bestseller. It was translated into 30 languages. In 1981, Wolfgang Petersen made it into a film.

Buchheim’s museum faced many challenges before opening. He searched for a suitable location for years. Cities like Duisburg and Munich were considered. Finally, Bernried was chosen. The Buchheim Museum opened in 2001. It was largely funded by the state of Bavaria.

Buchheim’s legacy lives on through his art and his museum. He saw the world with a unique eye. He found beauty and wonder in unexpected places. He inspires us to do the same.
