The name Bruckhaufen echoes with the history of Vienna. This neighbourhood, nestled between the Danube River and the Old Danube, bears witness to a rich past filled with floods, bridges, and even garbage dumps. Imagine yourself a hundred years ago; you would see a small island, just an “Haufen” or heap of land between two bridges. This is where the name “Bruckhaufen” originated, literally meaning “island by the bridge.” Historically, it was a place where the river often overflowed. In spite of this, or perhaps because of it, Bruckhaufen became a refuge for people seeking a simple life. After the First World War, a small settlement sprouted up. This was not a planned development with grand buildings and wide streets. It was a collection of small gardens and “wild” houses built by people who needed a place to shelter, to grow their food, and to feel safe.
In 1935, the city of Vienna purchased the Bruckhaufen land from the monastic order of Klosterneuburg. This marked a turning point in the life of this fledgling community. Wien wanted to create a more organized, modern neighbourhood, and in 1936, the city designated it as a mixed-use building zone. It was a decision that guaranteed Bruckhaufen’s future.
Today, much of the “wild” charm of the original settlement is gone. Nevertheless, Bruckhaufen still retains a sense of community and resilience. The neighbourhood has evolved with the times, adding modern urban amenities, but it has never lost its distinct character, a reflection of its humble origins.
