Originally named Crestwood Park the land was donated in 1954. It was later renamed in honor of Fairfax County Park Authority Board Chairman John W Brookfield.
Brookfield Park wasn’t always a haven for kids. It once suffered from neglect littered with trash. Then TrailsforYouth.Org TYO partnered with Fairfax County Park Authority. They built a pumptrack in 2017. The pumptrack transformed the park instantly. It became a magnet for young riders. The park became a cleaner and more family-friendly place.
TYO’s work extends beyond the pumptrack. They offer nature outdoor and STEM programs. Almost 90 percent of participants are minorities. 77 percent are at-risk youth. Kids like Pamela Steven Omar and Aline learned to mountain bike here. They honed their skills mastering the features. They found camaraderie and support.
The park’s success is a collaborative effort. TYO’s strong relationship with Fairfax County Park Authority made the pumptrack possible. The Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts MORE also contributed expertise and funding. Their partnership highlights the importance of collaboration. It exemplifies building a community resource.
