Amidst the tranquil beauty of Wainuiomata, lies the Brookfield Outdoor Education Center. This isn’t just any camp; it’s a place steeped in history and adventure. The Brookfield Outdoor Education Center sits on land originally purchased in 1864 by John Crowther. He envisioned a farm, but his daughter, Mary, saw something more. She nurtured the land, supplementing the farm income with a thriving orchard. The very trees that provided her livelihood still stand today at the Brookfield Outdoor Education Center, a testament to her enduring legacy. Mary developed a unique bond with two young hunters, Harold and Roy Nelson. Their friendship played a pivotal role in the future of Brookfield Outdoor Education Center. Upon her death in 1958, Mary bequeathed the property to the Scout Association, thanks to the Nelsons’ influence. The Brookfield Outdoor Education Center expanded to over 650 acres. It became a hub for Scouts, Guides, schools, and countless organizations. The original farm cottage transformed into the Campfire Circle, a place where stories are shared under the open sky. Even remnants of Mary’s garden hedge can still be seen. The Nelson brothers’ connection to Brookfield Outdoor Education Center didn’t end there. Their cottage from Petone was relocated to the site in 1989. Now known as Nelson Lounge, it houses cherished memorabilia, a tribute to their lasting friendship with Mary and their contribution to scouting. Today, the Brookfield Outdoor Education Center isn’t just a place for camping and outdoor activities. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of friendship, a tribute to a woman’s vision, and a vibrant center for education and recreation. From the renovated abseil tower offering breathtaking views, to the quiet whispers of the original orchard trees, the Brookfield Outdoor Education Center offers an experience that connects the past with the present.
