Was it courage or simply duty that drove him? Right here, on the Bronisław Pietraszewicz Lot Plaque, we remember a young man thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Born in 1922, Bronisław “Lot” Pietraszewicz, might have lived a normal life. However, fate, as it so often does, had other plans. The Bronisław Pietraszewicz Lot Plaque commemorates his bravery as a member of the Polish resistance during World War II. Imagine this young man, studying mechanics, drawn into the struggle for his nation’s freedom. “Lot” became a key figure in the “PET” group, a youth organization in Warsaw. He joined the Szare Szeregi (Gray Ranks), the Polish underground’s scouting organization, and quickly rose within its ranks. He participated in acts of sabotage, helped in the printing of underground newspapers. He even took part in a daring raid to seize potassium chlorate, a crucial component for explosives. His leadership qualities were undeniable. “Lot” was soon leading men, participating in increasingly dangerous missions. One of his most audacious acts was the execution of Franz Bürkl, a notorious Gestapo executioner in Warsaw. However, it was his role in the assassination of Franz Kutschera, the brutal SS and Police Leader of Warsaw, that cemented his place in history. The Bronisław Pietraszewicz Lot Plaque reminds us of the human cost of war. “Lot” was just 22 when he died from injuries sustained during Kutschera’s assassination. He sacrificed his future for his nation’s freedom. His story, forever etched on this plaque, is a testament to the courage and sacrifice of Polish youth during World War II. Let us remember Bronisław “Lot” Pietraszewicz and all those who fought for a free Poland.
