Beyond the bustling cityscape lies a testament to modern engineering the Shenzhen Bay Bridge. This bridge also known as the Hong Kong–Shenzhen Western Corridor is more than just a crossing it is a vital artery connecting Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
The Shenzhen Bay Bridge officially opened on July 1 2007. This date marked the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong’s establishment as a special administrative region of China. This bridge is a symbol of connection.
The Hong Kong–Shenzhen Western Corridor consists of three parts. First there is a highway bridge that spans from Hong Kong across the boundary. Second there is the Shenzhen Bay Port as a border checkpoint. This checkpoint lies entirely inside Shenzhen. Third roads connect the corridor to the road network.
The Shenzhen Bay Bridge itself stretches 5.5 kilometers long. It features a dual three-lane controlled-access highway. This design eases the flow of traffic. It links Ngau Hom Shek in Hong Kong to Dongjiaotou in Shenzhen’s Nanshan District.
As part of Hong Kong’s Route 10 the bridge plays a key role in the region’s transport network. The Shenzhen section links to the S3 Guangshen Riverbank Expressway. This extends the bridge’s reach.
Crossing Deep Bay also known as Shenzhen Bay the Shenzhen Bay Bridge minimizes environmental impact. The entire section over the bay is built on structures. This protects the marine environment and natural habitats.
The Shenzhen Bay Bridge can handle a lot of traffic. It can handle 58600 vehicles and 60000 cross-boundary tourists each day. This makes it a crucial link for both business and tourism.
When the Shenzhen Bay Bridge opened Hong Kong leased the Shenzhen section. This lease extends until June 30 2047. Hong Kong is responsible for the bridge’s maintenance and operation. Hong Kong laws apply on the entire bridge and within the Hong Kong Port Area.
Four Hong Kong public bus routes use this corridor. New Lantao Bus Company and Citybus operate these routes. They connect Yuen Long Tin Shui Wai and Tuen Mun. Green public light buses and cross-border buses also use the bridge.
The Shenzhen Bay Bridge stands as an iconic structure in Deep Bay. It strengthens Hong Kong’s position as a gateway to Mainland China.
