Could this imposing structure, the Branické ledárny, really have once held enough ice to chill a whole city’s beer? Right here in front of us stands a testament to Prague’s industrial ingenuity. Branické ledárny, built in 1911, was a marvel of its time. It was a massive icehouse, one of the first buildings in Prague to utilize a reinforced concrete skeleton. This innovative structure was designed by architect Josef Kovařovic and built by the renowned firm Nekvasil. Can you imagine the ice being harvested from the frozen Vltava River and transported here? The ice would be stacked meticulously within these walls, insulated by thick cork and air gaps. Branické ledárny had a capacity of 20,000 tons, enough to keep the beer flowing and food fresh throughout the city. These ice houses were more than just cold storage. They represented the hard work of the icemen, who often transitioned to become boatmen in the warmer months, their lives intertwined with the rhythm of the Vltava. The advent of the Slapy Dam in 1954, sadly spelled the end for Branické ledárny and its reliance on a frozen Vltava. The dam’s construction meant the river no longer froze consistently. Today, Branické ledárny stands silent, a grand dame of a bygone era. It’s a reminder of the ingenuity and hard work that went into keeping a city cool in a time before modern refrigeration.
