Bowen WMA a sprawling 313 acres of tidal marsh and waterways. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. Harry L Bowen gifted this land to the state in 1955 for the unbelievable price of just one dollar. A bargain for the state a treasure for wildlife.

This unique area is accessible only by water. Imagine paddling through its tranquil waters. Spotting the many bird species that call Bowen home. Black ducks mallards wood ducks and many more. They rest and feed in the vast tidal marshes. Ninety percent of Bowen is this vital habitat. A crucial stopover for migrating waterfowl. Rails hunt aquatic insects while mink muskrats and playful river otters thrive along the shoreline.

Bowen isn’t just for bird watchers. Hunting is permitted during legal seasons. It’s a place for anglers and crabbers too. Hiking is allowed though there are no established trails. Explore at your own pace. Remember though. Bowen WMA is trash-free. Pack out everything you pack in. There are no amenities here no restrooms benches or picnic tables. Prepare accordingly. Remember to leash your dog between April 15th and August 15th to protect nesting wildlife.

Bowen WMA is open 24/7 year-round. It’s a sanctuary for wildlife a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. It is managed by the Wildlife and Heritage Service. Their mission is to conserve and enhance diverse wildlife populations and habitats. They allow public enjoyment through hunting and other recreation.

Eighty-five percent of funding for Maryland’s wildlife programs comes from hunting licenses and a federal excise tax. This tax on hunting devices and ammunition started in 1937. Sportsmen and women have been contributing to wildlife conservation ever since.
