Boulder Hill in Wellington is part of the Western Hills. These hills are formed from greywacke sandstone and siltstone. This bedrock was formed millions of years ago on the deep sea floor. It’s a relic of ancient Gondwana. Plate collisions squeezed and deformed these sediments. Later Zealandia separated from Gondwana. Boulder Hill slowly rose up as the modern plate boundary developed.
Erosion played a key role. Softer siltstone eroded away. The harder sandstone boulders remained. Many are concretions formed within the sandstone layers. These are incredibly durable. They’ve withstood the test of time.
The last glacial period shaped Boulder Hill in a different way. Though not glaciated the hills were windswept. The ground was mostly frozen permafrost. Freeze-thaw cycles loosened the bedrock. Landslides and soil creep occurred. This debris covers many lower slopes and valleys. You can still see this mixture of soil and boulders in road cuttings.
Today you can climb Boulder Hill. Trails like the Puke Ariki Traverse lead to the summit. The views are incredible. You can see the Hutt Valley Wellington Harbour and even Mana Island. From the top the wind might howl. But the panoramic vistas reward your effort. The small pile of boulders at the summit marks your achievement. You stand on a peak shaped by ancient forces.
