But did you know, that the Botanischer Garten der Universität Zürich wasn’t always here? It actually began as a tiny seedling on a hill in the heart of Zurich. In 1837, the ‘Old Botanical Garden’ opened its doors, a haven for around 600 plant species.
Time, however, is a gardener with its own plans. The garden had grown, but so had the city around it. The need for a larger, more modern space became apparent. In 1977, the wish of many became reality. The Botanischer Garten der Universität Zürich, as we know it now, opened its doors to a new world of flora.
Today, surrounded by a gentle rustling of leaves and buzzing bees, we can explore a remarkable expanse of 5.6 hectares. Its winding paths lead us through diverse landscapes – from the alpine meadows to the sun-drenched Mediterranean. And then there’s the heart of the Botanischer Garten der Universität Zürich, its three futuristic-looking greenhouses. You can almost hear the air itself hum, as you step inside a vibrant rainforest with its lush greenery and exotic flowers.
