A modern marvel stands before us. This is Botanik II. Built between 1973 and 1975 Botanik II is part of the Julius-von-Sachs-Institut for Biosciences. It’s a testament to the University of Wuerzburg’s commitment to botanical research. Botanik II houses one of three chairs at the university. These chairs focus on plant physiology biophysics ecophysiology and vegetation ecology. Pharmaceutical biology is also studied here.

Botanik II wasn’t always here. The Botanical Garden itself dates back to 1696. That makes it the oldest botanical garden in Bavaria. Its early life was less impressive. It started as a small medicinal plant garden within Wuerzburg’s city walls. It was part of the Juliusspital. This garden was expanded significantly in 1741-1744.

Over time the Botanical Garden moved several times. It even survived the destruction of World War II. Finally in 1960 it found its current home on the Dallenberg. Botanik II’s construction marked a significant expansion. A modern extension was added between 2002 and 2004. This shows the garden’s continuing evolution. Even more recently a new building was constructed. This addition includes a “Green Classroom”. A total of 7.5 million Euros were invested until 2014 in a new lecture hall. The Julius-von-Sachs-Institute was also renovated.

The building before us is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents decades of scientific endeavor. It stands as a symbol of Wuerzburg’s rich botanical heritage. Botanik II continues to contribute to the university’s research and education missions. This is where the next generation of botanists is being trained. Look closely. You are witnessing a living history of botanical science.
