Whispers of ancient oaks and whispering reeds. This is Bornsjön nature reserve. A vast expanse south-west of Stockholm. Bornsjön covers 4615 hectares. It’s shared by three municipalities Salem Botkyrka and Södertälje. Bornsjön is more than just pretty scenery. It’s a vital part of Stockholm’s drinking water supply. Imagine the city’s thirst quenched by this very lake. That’s why Bornsjön’s protection is so important. Before its designation as a nature reserve Bornsjön faced significant threats from exploitation. Thankfully this beautiful place now thrives.

Bornsjön’s history is rich. It’s a landscape shaped by centuries of cultivation. You’ll find evidence of this everywhere you look. Ancient pastures dotted with oak trees and hazel bushes. Lush forests both broad-leaved and coniferous. Even grand manor houses stand as testaments to bygone eras. Look closely and you might spot a Bronze Age cairn. A silent sentinel of the past. Sturehov Manor a beautiful 18th-century manor house sits gracefully on Lake Mälaren’s southern shore. Its history echoes in the very stones.

Bornsjön is a haven for wildlife. Osprey and black-throated loons call this place home. Listen carefully you might hear the distinctive call of a grasshopper warbler on a summer morning. Many other bird species nest here. Skärbydammen pond a recreated wetland south of Skärby gård is a popular spot for waterfowl. You might even see a pintail or a shoveler. But remember Bornsjön’s delicate ecosystem needs our respect. It’s crucial to follow the reserve’s rules. No motorized vehicles off designated roads. No disturbing wildlife. No camping for longer than two days. This helps to maintain Bornsjön’s pristine beauty.

Bornsjön is easily accessible. You can reach it by car or public transportation. Several roads and trails are perfect for cycling or hiking. But remember some roads are closed to cars. If you arrive by bus use the Norsborgsvägen stop then walk to Sturehov Manor. Alternatively get off at Salem kyrka for the southeastern part of the reserve. Public transportation is an excellent option. Check SLs website for schedules.

Bornsjön is more than just a nature reserve. It’s a living history lesson. It’s a treasure trove of biodiversity. It’s a place where nature and culture intertwine. Let’s cherish this magnificent place for future generations. Let the whispers of Bornsjön’s past and present inspire awe and respect. Remember this special place. A vital part of Stockholm’s legacy.
