A regal structure stands before you. This is Borgen. King Karl XIV Johan commissioned its construction. He wanted a resting place during military exercises.

Borgen served as the King’s vantage point. From here he oversaw maneuvers on Ladugårdsgardet. The building is unique. It was designed by Fredrik Blom. Blom’s ingenious design allowed the building to be disassembled and reassembled elsewhere. This was a true feat of engineering for its time.

Borgen was built in sections in Stockholm. It was transported to its hilltop location. There it was assembled. Blom used this same modular construction method for Rosendal Palace. That palace was completed in 1826.

On May 11 1818 Karl Johan was crowned. The next day he held a large military review on Ladugårdsgardet. It was a huge public celebration. Borgen hosted balls and suppers for distinguished guests. On the King’s name day feasts were held for everyone. A tent was even erected on the flat roof. A painting by Fredric Westin from 1838 depicts Karl XIV Johan. He is on a white horse with Borgen in the background. The King loved being surrounded by his people and troops.

In 1977 Borgen was destroyed by fire. Luckily the interior had been removed for renovation. This allowed for a precise replica to be built in 1982. Today Borgen is owned by Kungliga Djurgårdsförvaltningen. The building is now a restaurant and event venue. It stands as a testament to a bygone era and the ingenuity of its creator. A symbol of Swedish history it continues to captivate visitors.
