Isn’t it remarkable how engineering feats of the past still stand? Here before us is the Boothtown Inverted Syphon Outlet Valve House. This structure is part of Sydney’s historic water supply system.
Completed in 1907 the Boothtown Inverted Syphon Outlet Valve House played a crucial role. It bypassed the older Boothtown Aqueduct now known as the Greystanes Aqueduct. The aqueduct was struggling to meet Sydney’s growing water demands.
The Boothtown Syphon was an innovative solution. It used gravity to carry water under a valley. This 3.15-meter reinforced concrete pipe was a marvel of its time. It was the longest continuous concrete work in Australia when constructed.
Imagine the scene during its construction. Workers carefully placing concrete. They ensured a seamless flow of water. The valve house controlled the water entering the syphon. It regulated the flow with steel trash racks and sluice gates.
The Lower Prospect Canal was vital to Sydney’s water supply. It stretched from Prospect Reservoir to Pipehead in Guildford. The canal’s original masonry construction was upgraded between 1907 and 1912. Pre-cast Monier plates and concrete relining increased its capacity.
The Boothtown Aqueduct had 22 arches. Each spanned 9.1 metres. Its total length was 225 metres. In 1892, the aqueduct’s parapet walls collapsed. They were rebuilt with concrete lining and tie rods.
The syphon allowed water to traverse the valley. It used gravity to push water back up into the canal. Concrete plugs blocked the aqueduct. This diverted the water flow into the syphon.
At the head of the canal near Prospect Reservoir stood a valve house. This controlled the water flowing from the reservoir into the canal. Valves within the valve house regulated the inlet pipe flow.
Further down the canal, near Pipehead, sedimentation chambers trapped sediment. These chambers ensured cleaner water entered Sydney’s supply. Two inground tanks near Percival Road supplied Smithfield with water.
In 1995, the Lower Prospect Canal became redundant. An underground pipeline replaced it at a cost of $54 million. The community rallied to preserve the Canal Reserve. The Canal Reserve Action Group formed. They lobbied to turn the land into a public reserve.
The valve house stands as a reminder of Sydney’s water management history. It showcases the engineering ingenuity of the early 20th century. It played a vital role in delivering water to a growing city. Its preservation ensures future generations appreciate our past.
