The Boothtown Inverted Syphon Inlet Valve House was built in 1907. It represents a significant engineering feat of its time. But to really understand its importance, we need to travel back a bit further in time.
In the 1860s Sydney was growing fast. The city needed a bigger, more reliable water source. A plan was approved to channel water from the Upper Nepean River. The Lower Prospect Canal was a key part of this Upper Nepean Scheme. It carried water from Prospect Reservoir to Pipehead in Guildford.
However, the Lower Prospect Canal faced a challenge at Boothtown. A valley stood in its path. The Boothtown Aqueduct was built in 1883 to bridge this valley. The aqueduct had 22 arches and stretched 225 meters.
Disaster struck in 1892. The aqueduct’s parapet walls collapsed. They crashed into the creek below. The walls were rebuilt. They were strengthened with concrete and tie rods.
Despite these repairs, the aqueduct’s capacity could not be increased. So, engineers built the Boothtown Inverted Syphon. It bypassed the aqueduct in 1907. That’s when the Boothtown Inverted Syphon Inlet Valve House was constructed.
The Boothtown Inverted Syphon used gravity to move water. It pushed the water down one side of the valley. Then, it forced it back up the other side. The Boothtown Inverted Syphon was a 3.15-meter reinforced concrete pipe. At the time it was the longest continuous concrete work of its kind in Australia.
The Boothtown Inverted Syphon inlet valve house controlled the water flow. It had steel trash racks. These racks prevented debris from entering the system. The aqueduct was blocked with concrete plugs. This diverted the water into the syphon.
In May 1995 the Lower Prospect Canal was decommissioned. It was replaced by an underground pipeline. But the Canal Reserve Action Group fought to preserve the area. They succeeded in turning it into a public reserve.
