Imagine living in a “Dumping Site”. That was Bonteheuwel in the 1960s. It was a place for coloured people forced out of Cape Town. This was due to the Group Areas Act of 1950. Today we stand before Bonteheuwel Mission Church.

Bonteheuwel Mission Church stands as a beacon. It offers hope in a community scarred by apartheid. Bonteheuwel itself tells a story of resilience. The Group Areas Act divided South Africa. It created distinct residential zones for blacks and whites. The best areas went to whites. Bonteheuwel became a place where coloured people were moved. Construction began in 1961. It finished in 1964. The area became a letting scheme owned by Cape Town City.

In 2001, Bonteheuwel had over 55000 residents. Ninety-five percent were classified as coloured. Only 4% were Black African. Afrikaans is spoken by 76% of the population. English is spoken at home by 22%. Most people live in brick houses. Some live in semi-detached houses or backyard dwellings. Bonteheuwel is predominantly a struggling community.

But the community is strong. Bonteheuwel’s Freedom Square is a Provincial Heritage Site. Freedom fighters gathered here. They strategized against apartheid. The Bonteheuwel Civic and library were assembly points. Activists addressed crowds from these platforms.

Bonita Bennett’s family moved to Bonteheuwel in 1964. She was a toddler then. They were forced from District Six. Her mother resisted calling Bonteheuwel home. She didn’t want to put down roots. It was about not accepting the situation.

Bonita often visited relatives in District Six. She regarded it as her real home. Her father worked in a shoe factory. He played bass guitar in dance bands. One was called the Bloemhof Crusaders. Bonita later directed the District Six Museum. The museum advocates for social justice. It challenges distortions of history. It helps people make sense of their lives.

The Bonteheuwel Mission Church stands as a testament. It shows the community’s enduring spirit. It also symbolizes faith and perseverance. It offers services in both English and Afrikaans. This reflects the community’s diverse linguistic background. It hosts Sunday morning worship. It also holds children’s church. There is also a Sunday Gospel service. Prayer meetings occur on Mondays. Youth group meets on Fridays.

The Bonteheuwel Mission Church is more than just a building. It is a place of gathering. It is a place of worship. And it is a symbol of hope. It stands proudly in a community that has overcome much adversity. It reminds us of the strength and resilience. It is a legacy of the people of Bonteheuwel.
