A journey of faith. That’s what the Bonnyrigg Turkish Mosque represents. Standing before this cream-colored brick building you can almost feel the weight of history. This isn’t just a mosque it’s a testament to the Turkish-Australian community. Construction began in 1992 on land leased by the NSW State Government. It’s a 500 square meter space filled with the sounds of prayer.

The Bonnyrigg Turkish Mosque is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of a community’s resilience. Turkish immigration to Australia was small until 1968. Then a large group arrived mostly Muslims from Anatolia. Many settled in Sydney’s western suburbs including Fairfield. The Bonnyrigg Mosque became their spiritual home. Hundreds of volunteers from the local community provided both financial support and labor.

The mosque’s architecture is traditional. It has three main elements a prayer hall a qibla wall and a courtyard. The prayer hall is spacious. A soaring dome lets in light. Solid columns support the impressive roof. Statues or images are absent. This follows Islamic law. Multi-colored rugs cover the floor. Hanging lamps candlesticks and stands for holy books adorn the interior. Women pray on a balcony accessed through side doors.

Daily life at the Bonnyrigg Turkish Mosque centers around salat the five daily prayers. Fridays are special. Up to 500 people gather for the noon prayer. The Imam delivers a sermon. Ramadan is the most significant celebration. It’s a month of fasting purification and communal prayer. Eid ul-Fitr marks its joyous end. Other important celebrations include Eid-Ul-Adha the Islamic New Year and the commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad’s ascension.

The Bonnyrigg Turkish Mosque is a place of worship community and cultural identity. It is a quiet place of reflection. It is a vibrant hub of activity. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community. It’s a story written in brick and prayer. A story that continues to unfold.
