Bonham Road Government Secondary School

Opened in 2000, Bonham Road Government Primary School carries a rich history within its walls. It’s located at 9A Bonham Road in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong. The Bonham Road Government Primary School building itself is much older than the school. Constructed between 1940 and 1941, it first served as the home of Northcote Training College. This makes Bonham Road Government Primary School a rare example of a building that has housed both primary and tertiary institutions. During World War II, the college was forced to close when Japanese forces occupied Hong Kong. The building became an administrative center for the Japanese police. Northcote Training College reopened in March 1946, after the Japanese occupation ended. The college eventually moved out in 1962. Then the United College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong occupied the building until 1971. Northcote Training College then returned, remaining until 1997. Finally, in 2000, Bonham Road Government Primary School moved in. The school originated from the Li Sing Afternoon Primary School. Did you know that the building includes air-raid shelters? Constructed during a time of conflict, these shelters were intended to protect students and teachers during air raids. Fortunately, the Battle of Hong Kong was short. The shelters were never used for their intended purpose. They now serve as a library and English activities room. This historical element adds another layer of intrigue to Bonham Road Government Primary School. The building was declared a monument of Hong Kong on July 16, 2021. This recognition underscores its historical and architectural significance.
