Hidden beneath the bustling streets of Prague lies a story. A story whispered by the waters of Bohnický potok. This unassuming stream meanders through Prague 8. It is one of many tributaries feeding the mighty Vltava River. For many years Bohnický potok was unseen. It was relegated to the depths a casualty of urban development. Its waters flowed unseen beneath the surface. The city’s relentless expansion deemed it an inconvenient obstacle. A mere trickle of water to be swiftly diverted underground.
But Bohnický potok’s story is not one of defeat. It’s a tale of resilience and renewal. In the past water was considered a hindrance. It was an obstacle to infrastructure development. A wild uncontrollable force to be tamed and hidden. The widespread construction of underground systems led to the draining of the stream’s sources. Many ponds and streams disappeared. Bohnický potok was one such victim. It was largely diverted into the city’s drainage system. This was a common practice across Prague impacting other streams like the Ďáblický and the upper reaches of the Stodůlecký.
However times changed. A new perspective emerged. A project known as “Streams for Life” was launched in 2005. This initiative championed the restoration of Prague’s waterways. The project’s motto was “Returning life and natural beauty to the streams”. It represented a significant shift in how Prague viewed its water resources.
The revitalization of Bohnický potok commenced during sewer reconstruction in 2005. The stream was brought back to the surface. This action was vital. It paved the way for the stream’s restoration. A section of approximately 160 meters was restored as part of the initial project. The ambitious goal is to restore the entire length of the stream within the Bohnice Valley. Due to extensive development the stream bed was reinforced with clay soil. Sections were also reinforced with boulder-filled riprap for stability. The work was completed between November 2018 and April 2019.
Today Bohnický potok flows again. It flows through the Bohnice Valley. A section of its banks forms a nature reserve. This protected area safeguards the natural beauty of the valley. The steep slopes on its right bank are preserved. This protects the area’s unique heat-loving plant communities. The aim is to preserve the rare species of flora and fauna found in this area. This area is northwest of the Church of St Peter and Paul. It lies to the right of the road from Staré Bohnice to the Vltava.
