Isn’t it interesting that a place called Bodal started as farmland? In 1379, it was known as Bothadall. By 1661, the name evolved to Boodaal.
Bodal sits on Lidingö’s southern coast. Today, it is a residential area. Apartment buildings dot Bodalsvägen. These buildings went up between 1952 and 1955. You will also see taller apartment buildings on Fregattvägen.
Originally, Bodal was a farm. Early on, it merged with Baggeby farm. Together, they included the original Lidingsberg croft. After a major land division in 1774, Bodal-Baggeby spanned about 97 hectares.
In 1775, Petter Eriksson-Svedberg bought these farms. He was a customs inspector. In 1900, a land consolidation was requested. This involved Bodal, Baggeby, and parts of Gångsätra farm. Johan Otto Wedberg represented Bodal farm. Otto Bergström represented Baggeby. John Fjällstad represented Gångsätra farm. The 1900-1902 division of Bodal-Baggeby lasted well into the 20th century.
Most of Bodal farm was sold. This excluded Lidingsberg. A plot was sectioned off around Bodal farm’s main building in 1934. Birger Wedberg built a larger house there in 1935. He lived there until his death in 1945.
In the early 1950s, John Mattson Fastighets AB bought much of Bodal-Baggeby. The goal was to build apartment buildings. These buildings now form the residential areas of Baggeby, Bodal, and Larsberg. Larsberg got its name from a plot from Bodal farm. This plot was called Larsberg and measured 3200 square meters. Larsberg’s bridge cottage sits there. In 1898, it likely served as a summer cottage plot.
The first buildings on Fregattvägen began in 1959. They were ready for move-in around 1960. The area was completed around 1962. The apartment buildings on Fregattvägen were a collaboration. Heba Fastighets AB, John Mattson Fastighets AB, and Liljeskiöld Byggnads AB worked together.
In 2007-2008, Heba built rental apartments on Bodalsvägen. These buildings are at Bodalsvägen 49-81. They are across from the entrance to Fregattvägen. The buildings have 87 apartments. The Fregattvägen properties are rentals. Most properties on Bodalsvägen are owned by housing cooperatives.
Bodal also features several community amenities. There is Bodal School. You can find Bodal Tennis Hall. Bodal also has a playing field and Bodal Church. At Bodal Church, a memorial stone honors Lidingö residents lost in the Estonia disaster.
Bodal borders Lilla Värtan to the south. Larsberg is to the east. Herserud is to the west. Mosstorp is to the north. Lidingsberg farm is near the Bodal residential area. The residential area along Bodalsvägen is considered historically significant. Stockholms läns museum has deemed it worthy of preservation. Because of this, Lidingö city decided in 1993 to restrict changes to the buildings’ exteriors. This applies to renovations and expansions.
Baggeby torg is the closest shopping center. It offers a grocery store and a restaurant. You can also find a store with a kiosk. Larsberg’s torg is the nearest larger shopping center.
The Lidingöbanan light rail has a stop in Bodal. It is conveniently named Bodal. During rush hour, buses run from Larsberg through Bodal and Lidingö centrum to Ropsten.
