Have you ever wondered about the quiet history of a place? Bocklemünd Mengenich isn’t the first name that springs to mind when one thinks of Cologne. Yet this northwest Cologne district holds a surprising past. Right here before us lies a landscape shaped by centuries of change.

Bocklemünd and Mengenich were once tiny villages. For many centuries they were dominated by farms. They existed as separate entities for a long time. Their history stretches back over a thousand years. The names themselves tell a story. Bocklemünd appears in old documents as Pocklemünd or even Bugchilomunte. The name might come from words meaning hill and mouth or perhaps a description of the terrain itself. Mengenich with its roots in Magniniacum points to a Celtic Roman settlement. The meaning ‘settlement of Magninus’ hints at a time long before Cologne’s current form.

Initially small farming communities Bocklemünd and Mengenich remained relatively unchanged for centuries. In 1798 along with other villages they were part of the Canton of Weiden. Bocklemünd’s population grew impressively. From around 130 inhabitants at the end of the 17th century it boasted over 500 by the 18th century’s end. Mengenich at that time had just over 200 residents.

In 1888 both villages were incorporated into Cologne. Despite attempts at development in the 1930s they retained their village atmosphere. The 1960s marked a significant shift. A massive construction project transformed the area. The ‘Trabantenstadt Bocklemünd-Mengenich’ aimed to build roughly 3000 housing units for more than 12000 inhabitants. The creation of this satellite town radically changed Bocklemünd Mengenich’s character.

The district continues to transform. The WDR West German Broadcasting established its large television studios there in 1985. Famous series such as Lindenstrasse and Verbotene Liebe were filmed here. This brought a new wave of activity and changed the image of Bocklemünd Mengenich once again. Today Bocklemünd Mengenich thrives with a population exceeding 10000. This mix of history and modern development makes it a fascinating district. It still holds historical buildings like Arnoldshof the oldest farm. The crossroads marks the location of the old parish church of St Johann. A monument at the cemetery entrance is also a reminder of the area’s history. The Catholic Parish Church of St Konrad is another landmark.

Bocklemünd Mengenich a blend of past and present. It’s a district that showcases the evolution of Cologne itself. Today one can find modern buildings alongside vestiges of its rural past. The area’s transformation continues to make it a unique and compelling part of Cologne. This journey through Bocklemünd Mengenich concludes here. I hope you’ve discovered something new about this often-overlooked gem in Cologne.
