Towering sandstone cliffs greet you. Welcome to the breathtaking Blue Mountains National Park. This isn’t just any park. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site a treasure trove of natural beauty and history.

Imagine early conservationist Myles Dunphy. In 1932 he envisioned a vast Greater Blue Mountains National Park. His dream included areas now part of the park we see today. Wollemi Kanangra-Boyd Nattai Gardens of Stone and Thirlmere Lakes were all part of his ambitious plan.

Officially gazetted in September 1959 the park initially covered 63000 hectares. It later expanded significantly becoming a cornerstone of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area in 2000. This incredible expanse protects a unique ecosystem.

The Blue Mountains aren’t mountains in the traditional sense. They’re an uplifted plateau. Rivers have carved deep valleys creating a dramatic landscape. Mount Werong the highest point reaches 1215 meters. The lowest point sits at just 20 meters above sea level along the Nepean River.

The park boasts incredible biodiversity. A third of Australia’s bird species call this place home. You’ll find a rich diversity of mammals reptiles and frogs. Keep an eye out for the endangered Regent Honeyeater. The Broad-headed snake and the Blue Mountains water skink are other endemic species. The park also holds a special place in plant evolution. The rare Wollemi Pine with fewer than 100 known trees thrives here.

The Three Sisters rock formation is world-famous. The most spectacular cliffs are north and south of Blackheath. These towering rock faces reach several hundred meters high. Millions of tourists visit every year drawn to the unique beauty and rich history. Many see the views from lookouts never stepping foot inside the park. Yet the park offers much more. Visitors can enjoy short walks to lookouts longer hikes into remote areas and even adventure sports like canyoning abseiling rock climbing and mountain biking. The Katoomba Scenic Railway the world’s steepest railway is also a local attraction.
