Imagine the year 1883. The Great Western Hotel a magnificent structure opened its doors. It was one of the finest British colonial hotels in the world. The hotel quickly became a favourite among international visitors Sydney’s elite and those eager to explore the wonders of the Blue Mountains. Newspapers of the day even compared it to Raffles Hotel in Singapore.

Harry Rowell a prominent Sydney hotelier built the Great Western Hotel. It later received a regal rename. Lord Carrington the former NSW Governor visited in 1887. The hotel became known as The Carrington Hotel. This name change cemented its place in history.

The Carrington’s fame grew. In 1927 the Duke and Duchess of York dined there. Huge crowds greeted the royals. The visit brought immense prestige to The Carrington. The hotel’s reputation as a honeymoon haven flourished for decades.

World War II brought changes. Tourism in the Blue Mountains slowed down. The Carrington however remained popular. It endured even after closing in 1986. For thirteen years The Carrington stood abandoned. Its grandeur slowly faded.

Then a turning point occurred. A consortium of buyers purchased the property. Michael Brischetto and Mark Jarvis spearheaded the revitalization. They poured over 10 million Australian dollars into restoring the hotel. This incredible renovation brought back the charm of The Carrington’s golden age.

The Carrington Hotel’s revival is a testament to its enduring legacy. Today it stands as a 4-star establishment. It’s more than just a hotel. It’s a hub for the Katoomba community. It’s a venue for festivals events and gatherings. It’s a living piece of Blue Mountains history. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine.
