Have you ever noticed a small stream winding its way through a bustling cityscape? It’s not always easy to see, but here in Prague, hidden amongst the vibrant streets and grand buildings, lies the Blatovský potok. As you stand here, right on the banks of this little creek, it’s hard to imagine that it’s a protected natural monument. Looking at the concrete walls that line the banks, it’s easy to dismiss the Blatovský potok as just another city stream, but the truth is, it’s an important habitat for a surprising variety of wildlife. This area was declared a natural monument in 2009, primarily to protect the peat bogs that surround the creek and the many rare species of mushrooms and insects that call them home. The clear water and the surrounding bogs provide a sanctuary for these creatures. In fact, there’s even a rare spider species that was only found here, the Saaristoa abnormit. It’s almost as if this little creek holds the secret, and perhaps the key, to the city’s diverse ecosystem, a hidden treasure nestled in the heart of Prague.
