Contemplate a house of worship that morphed from Presbyterian to Baptist. Today we stand before Bladensburg Baptist Church. It is a testament to faith hope and community resilience.
This location has a rich layered history. It begins long before the current congregation called it home. The original structure was erected in 1808. It served as a Presbyterian church. John Brackenridge a former chaplain of the U.S. Senate and House led the congregation.
Fast forward to the tumultuous years leading up to the Civil War. Maryland was a state grappling with the issue of slavery. It became a hub for exporting enslaved people to the Deep South. The story of Sarah Miranda Plummer intertwines with this church’s history.
In 1860 amid fears of slave rebellion Plummer was sold to a slave trader. She was only 18 years old. Sold for $1000 she was sent to New Orleans. Separated from her family she faced immense hardship.
Plummer found solace in her faith. She converted to the First African Baptist Church. She had dreams that influenced her new faith. These dreams told her to repent and she was convinced that God would send her home eventually to spread the gospel.
Her family never forgot her. In 1866 they managed to gather $250. Plummer’s brother Henry journeyed to New Orleans to find her. The reunion marked a turning point for the family.
Upon returning to Bladensburg Plummer converted her family to her Baptist faith. They started holding services in their family home. The congregation grew. It became known as St. Paul’s Baptist Church.
In 1874 the congregation purchased the old Presbyterian church building. This is the very building we see before us. It became their permanent home. The church remained at this location until 1973. Then they moved to a new location.
Today this building is known as Kingdom Missionary Baptist Church. The story of Bladensburg Baptist Church is a powerful reminder of faith.
