“This stone was laid by Mrs. H Hawkes, 17th October 1923.” These words are etched into the foundation stone of Blackheath Uniting Church. Today we explore its story. The Blackheath Uniting Church has been an important part of the religious and social life for over seventy-five years. The first Methodist services in the Blackheath district are believed to have been held about 1882. Before this building, there was an earlier weatherboard building. It was relocated from Mt Victoria in 1909 to a nearby site.
Look around at the simplified Gothic style architecture. This dates to the inter-war period. Some believe the architect was Albert Newman. The Blackheath Uniting Church is one of the finest church buildings in Blackheath. It is an important item in the streetscape.
The current church building was dedicated on April 18, 1924. This replaced the earlier weatherboard building.
