CLP’s Black Point Power Station hums with power, a colossal structure nestled in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong. It’s not just a power station; it’s a pioneer. Black Point Power Station holds the title of one of the world’s largest gas-fired combined-cycle power stations. Even more impressive, it was the first in Hong Kong to embrace natural gas for power generation. This shift, starting in 1996, allowed for a substantial reduction in emissions, even as the city’s electricity demand soared by 80%. The station primarily runs on natural gas, drawn from impressive sources like the Second West-East Gas Pipeline, a colossal structure stretching almost 9,000 kilometers. Think of it, natural gas flowing from Central Asia, across China, to power this very station! Black Point Power Station also taps into gas fields in the South China Sea and can even source liquefied natural gas directly from the international market. In case of need, ultra-low-sulphur diesel serves as a backup fuel. Eight units, each generating 337.5MW, plus a 550MW and a 600MW unit, combine to give Black Point Power Station a whopping gross capacity of 3,850MW. The ownership is shared between CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (70%) and China Southern Power Grid International (HK) Co., Limited (30%), under the umbrella of Castle Peak Power Company Limited (CAPCO). This collaboration reflects the growing ties between Hong Kong and Guangdong, promising a powerful future for energy in the region.
