Have you ever wondered why this gate is called Blå porten? Blå porten, or “The Blue Gate,” is a grand portal made of cast iron. It’s the last remaining gate that led to the Djurgården, a royal hunting park and today a popular recreation area. It was first built in the 17th century and served as the entrance to the royal hunting grounds. Back then, people could see shows such as lion versus bull fights. In the 19th century, a heavier gate became necessary, and the cast iron Blå porten was created to honor King Oscar I. In 1848, the new gate was finished and erected. It wasn’t always here; Blå porten has moved several times, with its current location dating back to the late 1960s. Before that, it was removed and placed in a different part of the park; then it was again moved to stand beside a building; and then finally back to its original site. Today, Blå porten stands as a majestic symbol of the past, a reminder of the royal hunting grounds that once graced this island. The gate stands as a monument to the changing times and serves as a key entrance to this beautiful historical park.
