How did Frederick the Great, the renowned military strategist, nearly lose the Battle of Bitva u Štěrbohol? We are standing on the very grounds where this pivotal battle, also known as the Battle of Prague, unfolded on May 6th, 1757. It was a clash of titans, the Prussian army led by Frederick the Great against the Habsburg forces under Prince Charles of Lorraine. The Bitva u Štěrbohol marked a turning point in the Seven Years’ War. Although Frederick emerged victorious, it came at a heavy price and nearly ended in disaster. Bitva u Štěrbohol is remembered as one of the bloodiest battles of the 18th century. Imagine the Prussian troops, confident in their superior training and discipline, marching towards the Austrian positions. Little did they know the treacherous terrain that awaited them. Instead of open meadows, they found themselves struggling through the mud and muck of drained fish ponds. The carefully orchestrated Prussian attack dissolved into chaos. Disaster loomed as the Austrians seized the moment, pushing back the floundering Prussian lines. Frederick, observing the unfolding chaos, was enraged by what he perceived as his infantry’s cowardice. Meanwhile, the legendary Prussian Field Marshal, Kurt Christoph von Schwerin, witnessing the retreat, took matters into his own hands. He grabbed the regimental colors, rallied the wavering troops, and led a desperate charge against the Austrians, only to be cut down by a fatal volley of canister shot. This pivotal moment, however, turned the tide of the battle. Inspired by Schwerin’s sacrifice, the Prussians fought with renewed vigor. This, combined with Frederick’s tactical brilliance and the daring maneuvers of his generals, ultimately secured a Prussian victory. The Bitva u Štěrbohol stands as a testament to the unpredictable nature of war where terrain, chance, and individual courage can dramatically alter the course of history.
