Nestled against the majestic slopes of Table Mountain lies Bishopscourt, a tranquil haven steeped in history. Bishopscourt is not just a name; it’s a whisper of the past, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Anglican Church in South Africa. Bishopscourt was originally part of a farm granted to free burghers by Jan van Riebeeck himself. Imagine, in 1660, van Riebeeck planting a hedge of wild almond trees to mark the farm’s boundary. Remnants of this historic hedge can still be seen today in the nearby Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. In 1851, Robert Gray, the first Bishop of Cape Town, acquired the land, renaming it Bishopscourt after establishing his official residence there. The name stuck, eventually encompassing the entire suburb. Bishopscourt today is a small, affluent residential area, home to roughly 350 houses, many situated on expansive one-acre plots. Bishopscourt has always attracted prominent figures. It’s home to numerous foreign consulates and embassies, solidifying its status as a place of both national and international significance. In 2015, Bishopscourt secured its place as the sixth richest suburb in South Africa, with average property values reaching a staggering R11 million. The residents of Bishopscourt take great pride in their community. They actively participate in local initiatives, like the rehabilitation of the Liesbeek River, transforming a neglected stretch into a beautiful riverine garden. This demonstrates the deep connection residents have with the natural beauty surrounding Bishopscourt. As you stand here, picture the lush gardens, the grand homes, and the breathtaking mountain views. Bishopscourt is more than just a wealthy suburb. It’s a testament to the passage of time, a blend of historical significance and modern luxury. It’s a place where the whispers of the past echo in the tranquility of the present, a place where history and nature intertwine to create a truly unique experience.
