Can a school rise from ashes? Bishop Ford Memorial School in Hong Kong certainly did. This school, nestled on Pui Man Street in Hong Kong’s Kwun Tong District, has a history as dramatic as a Cantonese opera. Imagine the scene: November 1951, a massive fire sweeps through Tung Tau Tsuen village, leaving thousands homeless. Among those witnessing the devastation was Archbishop Riberi. Moved by the plight of the refugees, he collaborated with the Catholic Church and the Maryknoll Fathers to establish a beacon of hope. Thus, Bishop Ford Memorial School was born. The school was named after Bishop Francis Xavier Ford, a Maryknoll missionary martyred in China in 1952. The construction began with just six classrooms in 1952. The cornerstone was laid on December 12th, a symbolic date marking the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The official opening of Bishop Ford Memorial School came on April 1st, 1953, with just 14 teachers and 10 classes. By September of the same year, the student population exploded to over 600, necessitating a split into morning and afternoon sessions. Bishop Ford Memorial School continued to expand. In 1957, an additional 18 classrooms were built. This brought the total number of classes to 48 and the student body to over 2,180. The school’s motto, “Wisdom, Virtue, Knowledge”, echoes its commitment to holistic education. The Maryknoll Fathers initially managed the school. However, due to their limited resources, the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong took over direct management in 1975. Bishop Ford Memorial School then faced another crisis in 2008. Due to low enrollment, the Education Bureau threatened closure. The school community rallied, and with the support of alumni, Bishop Ford Memorial School managed to privately fund a Primary One class. This allowed the school to remain open and eventually regain its aided status. Bishop Ford Memorial School stands today as a testament to resilience. It has weathered fires, both literal and metaphorical. It has emerged stronger each time, serving as a symbol of hope for the community.
