Have you ever felt the quiet power of ancient trees? Stand here before the Biosphärepark Wienerwald Kernzone Schwarzlacken. This is one of 37 core zones within the larger Biosphere Reserve. It’s a place where nature reigns supreme. The Biosphärepark Wienerwald itself is a vast area. It stretches southwest of Vienna. It reaches all the way to the Triestingtal and Gölsental valleys. This remarkable reserve covers over 105 000 hectares. Its altitude ranges from 160 meters to 893 meters above sea level. The highest point is Schöpfl.

The Biosphärepark Wienerwald is much more than just a pretty landscape. It’s a testament to decades of dedication to conservation. The area faced immense pressure due to Vienna’s proximity. Industrialization in the 19th century threatened its rich forests. However noble families like the House of Liechtenstein and initiatives by figures like Joseph Schöffel protected it from widespread destruction. The city of Vienna established a protected area in 1905. This aimed to protect the forests and meadows in the western and southern parts of the city.

Further efforts followed in the late 20th century. The Wienerwald Declaration of 1987 showed a commitment to protecting the Wienerwald. The 1994 Wienerwald Conference established initial protective measures. Many municipalities voluntarily participated. The Wienerwald Declaration of 2002 outlined implemented measures and set new ones. A feasibility study determined that the region’s diverse uses favored Biosphere Park status over National Park status. This decision led to the first zoning divisions.

The Biosphärepark Wienerwald Kernzone Schwarzlacken is a core zone. This means it receives the highest level of protection. These core zones are primarily forested areas. In Schwarzlacken forestry is prohibited. The choice and delimitation of the core zones happened in consultation with landowners. This ensured high acceptance among them. Protection comes from agreements between the Länder and owners. It also comes from their designation as nature reserves in Lower Austria. They are also part of the landscape protection areas in Vienna.

The Biosphärepark Wienerwald is a place where conservation and community intertwine. It’s a place of quiet beauty where you can connect with nature. It’s a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration and dedication to protecting the natural world. The Biosphärepark Wienerwald Kernzone Schwarzlacken is a silent guardian of biodiversity. It offers a glimpse into the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. Remember to respect this special place. Stay on the marked paths. Keep your dogs leashed. Never collect mushrooms or litter.
