Picture this. You are standing in Bill Anderson Park. The sun warms your face. The gentle Sydney breeze whispers through the Hill’s weeping figs. This isn’t just any park. Bill Anderson Park in Neutral Bay holds a fascinating history.

This urban oasis was once quite different. Before it became the park we see today it was the head of Neutral Bay. In the 1890s the land was reclaimed. This created the space for Bill Anderson Park. Initially known as Warringa Park it was dedicated on October 8 1899.

Many years later the park was renamed. It was renamed in 1926 to honor William Anderson. William Anderson was an important figure. He served as Alderman and Mayor of North Sydney from 1914 to 1918. A stone commemorates his public work. The inscription notes his service from 1891 to 1928. It also mentions his time as Mayor. He sadly passed away on February 29 1930.

Bill Anderson Park isn’t just a place to relax. It has hosted significant events. One memorable event was on July 17 1934. Thousands gathered to watch Charles Kingsford Smith and Captain Patrick Gordon Taylor take off. Their aircraft was a single-engined Lockheed Altair. They embarked on a promotional flight over Sydney. Initially the takeoff was planned for Macquarie Street. The local council denied permission. The plane was then transported by barge to Neutral Bay. The plane’s original name had to be covered due to Australian law. It was then quickly renamed the Lady Southern Cross.

Today Bill Anderson Park offers a variety of activities. There’s a floodlit sports field perfect for sports. There are pathways sandstone flagging and a small beach. It’s a place where history and recreation meet. It’s a place where people relax. It’s a place to remember a remarkable man. Bill Anderson Park continues to serve the community. It’s a legacy of reclamation dedication and community spirit. A true treasure in Neutral Bay.
