What colossal molecule is this, rising from the desert landscape near Santa Fe? This, my friends, is the Big TV Sculpture, a gigantic concrete artwork by David Rudolph, and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The Big TV Sculpture isn’t your typical roadside attraction. It’s a powerful statement, a quirky landmark in the high desert. The sculpture’s official name is simply “Big TV,” reflecting its subject: a massive, old-style television set. Made of concrete, it stands as a testament to the power and pervasiveness of the television age. Interestingly, this isn’t the only large-scale molecule model near Santa Fe. Not far from here sits another huge sculpture, known as the “Cognition Enhancer.” Created in 1999 by artist Steve Kline, it depicts a drug molecule, magnified a trillion times. While “Big TV” celebrates the familiar form of television, the “Cognition Enhancer” represents the unseen world of chemistry and the potential of scientific discovery. Both sculptures, in their own unique way, encourage us to think bigger, to look closer, and to appreciate the wonders of art and science in the unexpected landscapes of Santa Fe.
