Is it a hand? Is it a face? Here at the City Gallery Wellington, perched precariously on the roof, is Big Face. This giant sculpture, reaching a height of almost 16 feet, has been a source of much debate and discussion in Wellington. Some find it disturbing, others intriguing. But one thing is for sure: Big Face is hard to ignore. Big Face is the brainchild of Australian sculptor, Ronnie van Hout. Made of steel, polystyrene, and resin, it is actually based on scans of van Hout’s own hand and face. The name ‘Quasi,’ a nod to Quasimodo from Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame,” only adds to its enigmatic aura. Before arriving in Wellington in 2019, Big Face spent some time in Christchurch. Even there, it sparked controversy. But here in Wellington, it has become a bit of a landmark. Love it or hate it, Big Face has become part of the city’s skyline and a talking point for residents and visitors alike. So, next time you’re in Wellington, take a moment to look up at Big Face.
