A 1699 datestone. That’s what started it all at Big Chimneys Park. This unassuming park in Falls Church Virginia holds a secret. It’s much older than you might think. Big Chimneys Park isn’t just a green space. It marks the very beginning of Falls Church itself.
Big Chimneys Park sits on land where a log house stood. This was the first permanent structure in what would become the city. The date 1699 was etched into a stone. This stone was found in one of the house’s large brick chimneys. This date is considered the traditional founding date of Falls Church.
The park itself is a lovely place. It has walking paths picnic areas and a playground. New playground equipment was installed during a 2020 renovation. The renovation also improved drainage. This was a big deal. Before the improvements Big Chimneys Park had a major mosquito problem. Standing water created a muddy mess. That is what the renovation solved.
The park features interpretative signage. This highlights the park’s history and its name’s origin. The name Big Chimneys comes from those two large brick chimneys of the original house. The house itself was quite large. It measured roughly 25 by 55 feet with three chimneys. It had four rooms downstairs and three upstairs. It wasn’t torn down until around 1908.
Big Chimneys Park underwent a major makeover. It reopened in January 2021. The improvements included ADA access and new park furniture. A picnic shelter and a memorial plaque honor Dr Nelson Podolnick. He was a longtime city resident who passed away in 1993.
