A tiny tricolor puppy. That’s how it all began. Right here in Germany. The story of the Biewer Terrier started in 1984. Two Yorkshire Terriers a seemingly ordinary breeding. But something extraordinary happened. Two little puppies were born with a unique tri-colored coat. A veterinarian friend of the breeders Werner and Gertrude Biewer suggested a name. Biewer Yorkshire Terriers. The name honored the breeders. It’s a name that would become synonymous with a new breed of dog.
The Biewer Terrier a charming toy breed. It quickly captured hearts. Mrs Biewer herself described the breed as Wunderbar. A testament to its unique appeal. These adorable little dogs became popular in Germany. Soon after American dog lovers began importing them. In 2006 the Biewer Terrier Club of America BTCA was formed. Its mission was to promote and preserve the breed.
But there was a question lingering. Was the Biewer Terrier truly a distinct breed? Or simply a variation of the Yorkshire Terrier? The BTCA sought scientific proof. In 2007 they collaborated with Mars Veterinary. Ten blood samples were analyzed. The results confirmed that Biewer Terriers formed a cluster distinct from Yorkshire Terriers. It was a groundbreaking moment. The first time a dog breed was confirmed through genetic analysis instead of pedigree records.
The Biewer Terrier’s journey to full recognition continued. In 2014 it was accepted into the AKC’s Foundation Stock Service. Then in 2021 the American Kennel Club AKC granted it full recognition in the Toy Group. A testament to years of dedicated work by breeders and enthusiasts.
