Ever wondered what makes a library more than just books? The Biblioteca civica Centrale in Turin is not just a repository of knowledge. It is a living archive of Turin’s cultural and intellectual history.

Let’s step inside this grand building. The Biblioteca civica Centrale first opened its doors in 1869. Giuseppe Pomba a municipal councillor was the driving force. He envisioned a library accessible to everyone especially artists and creators. Pomba wanted it open during hours convenient for them. He equipped it with modern works and saw it as an opportunity for social enrichment.

Initially the library was housed inside the Palazzo Civico. Pomba wanted an archive of memories related to the city. Total accessibility for all and operation at the expense of local public finances were its founding characteristics.

In 1929, the Biblioteca civica Centrale moved to a more spacious building on via della Cittadella. However disaster struck in 1943 when bombing raids destroyed the building. Undeterred the library found temporary refuge in Palazzo Carignano. Finally in 1960 it was rebuilt on its original site.

Today the Biblioteca civica Centrale boasts an impressive collection of over 500000 documents. These include books pamphlets audiovisual material and more. The library also treasures over 2000 manuscripts 67 incunabula and 1600 sixteenth-century books. It subscribes to over 2800 newsmagazines.

Of particular interest are the collections focused on local history figurative arts theatre and visual arts. The Biblioteca civica Centrale also provides services for blind and dyslexic people ensuring accessibility for all. The oldest documentation in the library dates back to the fifteenth century.

Among its treasures are manuscripts produced by Vincenzo Gioberti. The library also houses the Fondo Amedeo Avogadro di Quaregna. This includes 75 volumes of his notes and scientific papers. These volumes contain summaries of scientific memoirs and Avogadro’s comments.

Another notable collection is the Fondo Giambattista Bodoni. This collection includes almost all the works listed by De Lama in his biography of Bodoni.

The Biblioteca civica Centrale continues to evolve adapting to the needs of its community. It stands as a testament to Turin’s commitment to knowledge culture and accessibility. As we leave the library consider its lasting impact on the city. It is a place where the past is preserved and the future is inspired.
