How did Bezirk Tulln transform from part of other districts to a district in its own right? We are standing in a region shaped by centuries of history. Bezirk Tulln, nestled in Lower Austria, wasn’t always a distinct entity. The areas that now form Bezirk Tulln were under the jurisdiction of districts like Hernals, Währing, Krems-Land, and Sankt Pölten-Land. The year 1892 marked a turning point for Bezirk Tulln. Following the integration of Währing into Vienna, Bezirk Tulln emerged as an independent district. However, the journey wasn’t without its twists. Klosterneuburg, with its surrounding areas, became part of Vienna in 1938. In 1954, it was reincorporated into Lower Austria but as a part of the newly established Wien-Umgebung District. But the story of Bezirk Tulln doesn’t end there. Another pivotal year was 2017 when the Wien-Umgebung District was dissolved. Klosterneuburg found its way back to Bezirk Tulln, solidifying the district’s present-day formation. Today, Bezirk Tulln encompasses 22 municipalities. These include two cities and 16 market towns, each contributing to the district’s unique character. These shifts and changes in Bezirk Tulln’s administrative structure reflect the evolving landscape of Austria. They remind us that even seemingly permanent boundaries are subject to the currents of time and political decisions.
