Founded in 1865 Beulah Baptist Institutional Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. This wasn’t just any church. It was the first Black Baptist Church in Tampa Florida. Imagine the courage it took to establish a place of worship in the aftermath of the Civil War. Before 1865 Black congregants worshipped in the balcony of the all-white First Baptist Church of Tampa. This building a symbol of hope and freedom.

Beulah Baptist Institutional Church began on Central Avenue then moved to Harrison Street. In 1908 it became incorporated a non-profit organization. It continued to grow and move. It moved again in 1937 to its current location on Tyler and Pierce Streets. This is where Reverend Dr A Leon Lowry Sr served for forty years. He was a powerful force for civil rights in Tampa and beyond. He was one of Martin Luther King Jr’s theology professors and state president of the NAACP. He led the construction of the current sanctuary in 1969. He also oversaw the building of the A Leon Lowry Sr Family Service Center in 1990.

The church has seen many pastors each building on the foundation laid by those who came before. Reverend James W Favorite continued the church’s role in community advancement. He established a “Vision toward the Year 2000” focusing on ministry education and evangelism. In 2003 a remarkable reunion service was held with the First Baptist Church of Tampa. This was the first time the two churches had worshipped together since Beulah’s founding.

The church faced challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the congregation to worship online. But even then Beulah Baptist Institutional Church found innovative ways to connect. Services were streamed using Zoom and social media. The sanctuary was remodeled during this time. The church added safety equipment and updated technology.

In 2022 Reverend Alan Harris became the fifteenth senior pastor. His vision “Beulah We Build Here” reflects a commitment to building strong families and a strong community. The church’s motto “We are a movement not a monument We build here” perfectly captures its enduring spirit. Beulah Baptist Institutional Church continues to serve as a beacon of hope faith and community in Tampa. It’s a living testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring strength of faith.
