Constructed in 1938 the Bethesda Theatre first opened as the Boro Theatre. However within a year it changed its name. It became the Bethesda Theatre. This Streamline Moderne movie house is located at 7719 Wisconsin Avenue.
Designed by John Eberson the Bethesda Theatre is composed of rectangular blocks. Eberson was known as the Dean of American Theatre Architects. The building features an auditorium block. It also has a lower street-front lobby. This includes shops.
Imagine the grand opening. The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Tribune published a supplement. It commended Sidney Lust for his vision. Politicians and film stars also sent congratulations. Shirley Temple and Clark Gable were among them.
The Bethesda Theatre was one of the first buildings in the area with air conditioning. It hosted film showings. It also hosted community events. The theater’s original layout included a lobby, foyer, and lounges. Many original interior finishes remain intact. These include painted murals.
In 1983 the Bethesda Theatre reopened as the Bethesda Cinema and Drafthouse. Moviegoers could enjoy pizza, sandwiches and beer. In 1990 it changed its name again. It became the Bethesda Theatre Cafe.
A major renovation occurred in 2007. It became a venue for theatrical productions. However a severe water leak forced it to shut down in 2009. The landmarked Art Deco ceiling collapsed.
The Bethesda Theatre was auctioned off in 2010. In 2013 it reopened as the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. This highlights its cultural significance.
Polysonics helped renovate the Bethesda Theatre. They added state-of-the-art acoustical techniques. They also installed a digital audio performance system. The designs preserved the historic structure. The interior finishes were restored to their 1930s splendor.
