How about a trip back in time? Imagine Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1926. It was a small two-story building then.
Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School or B-CC has a long and interesting history. It started on Wilson Lane with just fourteen rooms. But it soon moved to its current spot on East-West Highway. That happened in 1935.
The school’s growth reflects the community’s evolution. New buildings and additions expanded the campus over the years. This met the needs of a growing student population. From 1946 to 1950, the B-CC building even housed Montgomery Junior College. This shows its importance to local education.
In 1994, community members joined forces. They wanted to modernize Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. This led to a major renovation project from 1999 to 2002. The project combined the old and new parts of the school.
More recently in 2018, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School opened a new addition. It added 34 classrooms and a dance studio. The campus now covers a total of 402622 square feet.
Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School offers many academic opportunities. It provides honors courses and Advanced Placement courses. Its signature program is the International Baccalaureate program. B-CC aims to develop lifelong learners. The school wants to foster critical thinking and responsible global citizenship.
The school’s facilities are impressive. There are 80 classrooms and a media center. The media center has computer workstations and TV studio. There is also a greenhouse and a music laboratory. Students enjoy two gyms and a weight training room. The 900-seat auditorium hosts many events. The cafeteria provides breakfast and lunch. B-CC even had a Cyber Cafe and a Language Lab.
B-CC is known for its athletics. The school fields more than 25 teams. They are known as the Battlin’ Barons. The rivalry with Walt Whitman High School is intense. Games are often called the Battle of Bethesda.
Many notable people attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. They include politicians, business leaders, and athletes. David Boren was a U.S. Senator and Governor of Oklahoma. Tommy Davidson is a comedian from In Living Color. Laura Hillenbrand wrote Seabiscuit: An American Legend. David Simon created the HBO series The Wire.
The school’s newspaper partnered with MCPS-TV. This expanded their reach into digital media. The B-CC Theatre Guild encourages students to explore theatre.
